Where To Get Your Art Fix
Colorado is a big, beautiful state and boy does it have amazing artists! If you are seeking a funky print to dress up your Denver apartment, or want an artful memento of your mountain adventure, there is plenty of places to choose from. Here is a list of six places you might seek a bit of artistic inspiration:
Denver's Sante Fe Dr.
The Sante Fe Art District of Denver is probably the most well known places to get your art fix. This little stretch of road is the home for galleries of all kinds, bringing the community photography, painting, illustration and sculpture. Find inspiration from budding artists at MSU's Center for Visual Arts. Be enriched by Colorado's leading latino artists at CHAC Gallery. Or support the Veterans Art Council at VFW. If you have never spent a First Friday with these amazing creatives, I highly recommend it! It is an experience like no other.
40 West Arts District, Lakewood
This gem of the metro area is an arts district for artists. Find unique work by painters, glassblowers, woodworkers, sculptors and more along the Colfax corridor. Their laid back vibe and stellar food scattered between the studios make adventures here an absolute pleasure. This is one little corner of town you can really shake hands with artists and get inside their heads. You may even want to sign up for a class or two, as education is a big part of what these guys do best.
Though RiNo, or River North, is no longer the best place to seek out fine art galleries, it is a stellar location to see Denver street art and enjoy some culinary creation. This little corner of the city was a warehouse district until recent years when it was met with some amazing transformation. Though many artists have been squeezed out by rising rental prices, it still resonates with their influence. The annual Crush event brings fresh paint to nearly any wall your eyes can find, and the restaurant quality can't be matched. Want a fun date night, try this neighborhood!
Downtown Longmont Creative District
Check your pretension at the door when visiting here. Longmont is a blue collar town with a heart of gold, and a badass city center. Nestled among beautiful Victorian homes is a hot spot for creative commerce. It may not be as well known, but this town has art nearly everywhere. Visit their various museums and galleries along the main drag before popping into a cafe adorned with local art. It's worth the trip out of town.
Telluride Arts District
This mountain town is nothing like you expect. Beautiful? yes. Off the beaten path? Slightly. Podunk? Not even kinda! Telluride is a stunning spot rich with history and culture. They host the infamous Bluegrass Festival and my favorite Horror Film Festival annually, making for some amazing weekend getaways. They even have their own art walk every First Thursday of the month, featuring beautiful work you'll only see there.
Okay, so the city of Westcliffe is not officially an "art district" but it is AMAZING! This tiny little town is packed with art galleries, crystal shops, theaters and hidden gardens. When you roll into town it doesn't look like much but don't let that fool you. While exploring this historic destination with the Sangre De Cristos mountains in the backdrop you will find endless wonders. This unassuming town is rich in creative talent and nearly every storefront features local artists and makers. Between the shops, you will find hidden gardens, tucked away outdoor theaters and wonderful architecture. Since my first visit, I have been inspired by this beautiful place, I imagine you will be too.
